The number of people who fled Ukraine because of the Russian war of aggression has exceeded five million. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said today that 4,796,245 million Ukrainians had left their country.
In addition, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there are nearly 215,000 nationals of other countries who lived in Ukraine and have since also fled the country. This is the most significant movement of refugees in Europe since World War II.
Ninety percent of those who have fled abroad are women and children, as men between the ages of 18 and 60 are currently not allowed to leave Ukraine. The majority of refugees – 2.7 million – went to Poland. According to IOM estimates, another 7.1 million people are also fleeing within Ukraine.
Before the Russian invasion, 37 million people in Ukraine lived in government-controlled areas – not counting the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia and the pro-Russian separatist regions in eastern Ukraine.
